Wide Old Owl

$4.00

This owl is flat in shape but not in personality. This pattern makes coasters or appliques about 4.5″ wide and 3.5″ tall (just under 9×12 cm).

Description

With an F/5 hook (3.75mm) and a small amount of yarn, you can make a very flat owl face for use as an applique or coaster. You’ll stitch the eyes first and separately from each other, and then the rest of the face around the eyes. The beak is a long stitch made into faraway loops in the style of overlay crochet; the rest of the shaping is done via various height stitches.

The total amount of yarn is about a quarter ounce (7 g), mostly in the main face color with a small amount in 2-3 other colors, depending on which style eye you use. Photos show each round along the way and clarification points.

Stitches and techniques assumed: slip knot, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and its decrease, triple crochet, stitching in back loop only, single crochet color change and for taller stitches, weaving in ends, attaching new yarn with slip stitch, magic ring.

Taught in pattern: needle join, in particular in second stitch after end; triple treble crochet; linked triple crochet. This video from Mooglyblog will give you a view of the linked triple crochet, but it doesn’t translate entirely because she pulls loops up through bars that only exist if you make a row of LTR starting from a turning chain. In this you’ll have to pull your loops up through a standard tr; a diagram of suggested locations is given in the pattern.

The story of this pattern is on the blog.
